Question about hominy/grits?

I had brunch at a little cafe with my sister and her husband last week and my meal came with what they called grits. The grits I'm used to (I was born and raised in Alabama) are tiny little specks cooked in water or milk, but these grits were much larger grains. We thought at the time it might be hominy, but I don't think that's quite right either. It was like some sort of hybrid between the two. It was really good, though, so can somebody tell me what this might have been or a store I can buy it from? I haven't seen anything other than Quaker instant grits or cans of hominy in my local grocery stores.
