Why does God seem to hide himself from being easily known by humans in the ways humans recognize one another?

Indeed, if God wishes to have a relationship with each person, why does it seem that God so thoroughly escapes our notice? We don't have to exert nearly so much effort to get to know other human beings that we can recognize with our various physical senses. Why is it so different with God?
